Foundation Layout: 22 Piers in Progress
After multiple design consultations with the client, Handyman Mark finalized the plans, secured the necessary permits, and began laying out the 22 foundation piers essential to support the structure.
A foundation built to last
All posts were securely installed using Simpson structural post bases, with the anchors tightened to the manufacturer’s specified 90 ft-lbs for optimal stability.
Precision support installation
The 45-degree supports were pre-drilled, and 6-inch Simpson structural screws were countersunk for a clean and secure installation.
Designer touches define this home
The 6-foot-wide stair entry, perfectly centered on the crow’s nest, paired with a striking 14-foot chain-mounted lamp, has turned this home into the envy of the neighborhood.
Front Door View: Post-and-Beam Perfection
Stunning post-and-beam craftsmanship frames the roofline, creating a breathtaking view from the front door. A masterpiece of quality and design, it sets the tone for an amazing day every time you step outside.
Stunning crow’s nest with 30-foot span
A one-of-a-kind custom deck, finished just in time for Thanksgiving! The highlight is a stunning crow’s nest featuring robust 4×6 post-and-beam construction, spanning approximately 30 feet.
All-weather entertaining with this covered roof
Our roof installation ensures the deck can be enjoyed even during inclement weather. The seamless metal spans the entire length, eliminating any risk of leaks. Shoe molding was added to trim the base of the beams for a polished finish.
Talented craftsmanship at its finest
A 72-foot-long, boardwalk-style custom deck with two grand entrances showcases Handyman Mark’s exceptional craftsmanship. Gutter drains are discreetly mounted on the backside of the rear posts, ensuring a clean and polished appearance.
Quality materials create strong visual impact
Premium 5/4 decking boards were chosen for their consistent wood grain and secured with 2.5-inch deck screws for lasting durability.
Ample power for ambiance and entertainment
The electrical package includes two GFCI duplex outlets positioned on either side of the front door and a centrally mounted grand entry lamp suspended by a 4-foot chain.
Major Structural Repairs on a 1920s Bungalow
Rotten joists and a sagging subfloor caused the kitchen to sink in this 96-year-old home.

Broken tile resulting from sagging subfloor
A sagging subfloor in this 96-year-old home will no longer properly support the ceramic tile that was laid approximately 4 years ago.
Removing three layers of old flooring
We began by carefully peeling back 3 layers of flooring, hauling out one cart at a time.
Inner and outer band rot
We also discovered inner and outer band rot once all the sub floor had been removed.
Protected from invading critters
At the end of the workday, we secured the project area to keep vermin out of the home.
Rotten joists being removed
Rotten joists were removed, exposing the crawl space to the interior of the home.
Collapsed plumbing
Extreme moisture in the crawl space rotted the inner band board and caused the plumbing to collapse.
Outer band board replacement
Pointing up the 1920s home foundation while doing outer band repair work
Dangerous electrical connections
Previously dangerous crawl space electrical connections were brought up to code.
Temporary bracing
Temporary bracing was used to support the kitchen wall while inner/outer bands were under repair.
New footer with support jacks
A footer was poured and jacks installed to support this outside corner.
Additional footers and jacks
Additional footers and jacks were used as a supplementary support mechanism for the new joist to be installed.
Kitchen wall removed
Kitchen wall was removed to facilitate repairs. Three new footings have been poured for additional support.
Floor jacks with newly poured footing
Floor jacks were used to support the sagging corner. A new footing had to be poured.
Completed joist installation
Joists are in and services have been reattached to them (pipes, electrical, HVAC).
Intricately maneuvering the difficult hallway
This difficult hallway section required more footings and jacks as well as moving the HVAC system to create work space.
Preparing to close surgery on the wall
The new wall structure is complete and we’re ready to close up.
Sister studs support the kitchen wall

Basement before construction

ROCKWOOL insulation
The walls and ceilings were filled with ROCKWOOL insulation to provide additional sound isolation within the spaces. The fireplace cavity would soon be one of the major focal points.
Old construction-grade tub
The construction grade tub would soon be replaced with a custom ceramic tile shower.
Unfinished stud walls
Going the extra mile, Handyman Mark installs additional wall blocking to ensure the 10ft studs remain stable over time prior to the sheetrock hang.
The original stairwell
We would eventually add wainscoting, wall sconces and upgraded handrails to spice up the stairwell to the main living area.
Custom coffered ceiling
The owner had us design this custom coffered ceiling to accentuate the billiard space. Sherwin Williams Emerald Sheen paints were used to bring the space to life. Our electrician put the final finishing touches on with the massive billiard table light.
